Jobs, promotions and investing in a life simulator: a practical guide

Updated October 22, 2026

A job changes income and the choices a character can afford later. Forked Lives v2 expands broad job categories into 70 specific careers, with hiring, promotion, unemployment and re-employment in the annual simulation.

Find jobs your character can actually apply for

In a newly started life, open Spending and investments from the game sidebar. The career section shows your job, level and experience. Once your character is old enough, its selector lists roles meeting the current age, education and era requirements. Technology-dependent roles do not appear before their availability year.

You can apply once per year. An application is not guaranteed employment: the game checks the fixed seed and current conditions. An unsuccessful application leaves another opportunity next year. Legacy v1 records retain their earlier rules rather than receiving a newly invented career history.

Promotion has requirements and changes actual income

Careers share five levels, from entry level through qualified, senior, lead and expert. Apply after meeting the experience and knowledge requirements. A successful promotion changes income; annual simulation can also produce promotion, job loss and re-employment.

Career names are fictional game roles, not professional licensing rules. Education and attributes influence opportunities, but neither a salary nor a qualification in this game describes what a real country requires for medical, teaching or engineering practice.

Separate cash, investments, debt and your home

The panel lists available cash, investments, outstanding debt, home equity, annual income, living costs and investment gains or losses. Net worth is not cash available to spend immediately. Buying property or allocating investments changes the balance between these amounts.

Phones, computers, vehicles, appliances and housing cost actual game cash and can add future running costs. Each action checks age, era, existing ownership and whether it has already been completed this year. Repeated clicks do not create free benefits.

Seven investment allocations use explicit game assumptions

Cash and deposits, bonds, a balanced fund, stocks, a global diversified fund, a property fund and business investment have different game returns and volatility. Availability depends on the era. Returns settle annually, and half of the investments can be withdrawn back into cash.

These are not real securities or market forecasts. Returns, living costs, savings and career pay follow simplified original rules. Using public demographic data does not turn those separate economic assumptions into reliable financial predictions.

Compare a decision before comparing final wealth

To compare study, earlier work or migration, branch from a saved decision and keep the original life. Establish where the shared past ends, then read health, relationships and happiness alongside assets. A larger balance does not explain every trade-off.

Keep a full JSON backup or use the encrypted transfer and personal pass when you choose to. An invitation QR recreates the starting origin. It does not carry a current job, portfolio or private notes and cannot replace a restorable save.
